“Rogan’s Heroes”

Colonel Krink looked angrily out of the bubbly window of his corner office at the muddy exercise yard of Stalag 13.  His shining brow was wrinkled with worry and disgust as he surveyed the empty yard of the prison.
“How many have gone, Shulz?”
The portly sergeant looked around the room sheepishly, not wanting to give the report that he had to give.
“How many?!
“Hrmrmmm….” He mumbled into his hand.
“Say it again.”
“All of them.”
Colonel Krink’s face went so slack that his monocle dropped from his eye and into his pocket.  “All of them?  How could that happen, Shulz?”
Shulz shook his head powerfully.  “I know nothing, NOTHING!”

In the woods not far from the camp, a growing group of escapees milled around under the thick canopy of pines.  Col. Robert Rogan cocked his hat on his head and looked at the map in front of him.
“So, Clinch, which way are we heading here?”
Sgt. Clinch stepped up to the front.  “We’re going 12 degrees North until we get to the river, and then we’ll need our boat passes and papers.  Once you tell me where the compass is, we’ll get started”
Rogan frowned at his companions.  “I thought you had the compass.”
Clinch returned the frown.  “LeBeauf was supposed to bring it.”
The small Frenchman bobbed his head into the middle of the circle, “Oh no!  Don’t you try and hang zis on me.  My job was to bring ze weapons.  YOU were supposed to get the paperwork and the compass.”
Rogan broke up the row.  “Children, please!  It doesn’t matter who was supposed to bring it.  What matters is that no one brought it.  Now we’ll have to go get it.”
“But how?” Corporal Newkirt inquired, “It’s back in the camp.  They’ll have every guard in the wire looking for us!”
Rogan was unflustered.  “Of course they will, but we’re going to do something that they would never expect…”
“I don’t like the sound of this,” Newkirt interrupted.
“We’re going to attack.”

Colonel Krink donned his overcoat and loaded his pistol.  “Shulz!”
“Yes, Mein Commandant!”  
“Ready the men.  Release the dogs.  We are going into the woods to bring them back.  No one has EVER escaped from Stalag 13!”
